Your slab is already there. Finish it.
Shanks Concrete Coatings grinds, patches and coats garage, basement, shop and patio floors across northeast Alabama. Taylor Shanks runs the grinder himself on every job, so the floor you walk on is the floor he built.
One slab, before and after the grinder
Raw slab
Cured floorSame floor, same building, about a week apart. The difference is not the coating · it is what happens underneath it. Concrete has to be opened up with a diamond grinder before anything will bond to it, and that step is where most floors are won or lost.
Grind
Diamond tooling takes the slab down past the sealed, troweled surface until it has an open profile. Old coatings, glue and paint come off here. This is the loudest, dustiest day and it is the one that decides everything after it.
Repair
Cracks get chased out and filled, spalls and pits get patched, and control joints get treated so they do not telegraph through the finish. A slab that has been parked on since the eighties usually needs a full day of this on its own.
Coat
Base coat goes down, flake or quartz is broadcast into it while it is wet, and the excess is scraped back the next morning. Then the clear topcoat, which is the layer you actually walk on and the one that decides the sheen.
Pick the floor for the room, not the brochure
A garage that holds a truck and a floor jack wants something different from a finished basement, and a wash bay wants something different again. Below is what each system is genuinely good at, so you can rule things out before anyone comes to look at your slab.
Flake floors
Vinyl chip broadcast into a pigmented base coat, then locked under a clear topcoat and troweled up the wall as a coved base. It hides dust and tire marks, it is not slick when it is wet, and it is the floor most Anniston homeowners actually want once they have stood on one.
Colors are blended to the room rather than pulled off a chart. The garage above is a gray and white blend; the basement below it is blue, black and gray.

Metallic epoxy
Pearl pigments moved through a clear resin so the floor reads like poured stone. Basements, showrooms and entertaining spaces.

Grind and seal
The concrete you already own, opened up, stained if you want color, and sealed. The honest option when the slab has good character.

Quartz systems
Graded quartz broadcast for grip and load. Kitchens, wash bays, commercial rooms.
Solid color
One clean color, high gloss, nothing to distract. Shops and work bays.

Patios and pool decks
Textured coatings that stay cool enough to stand on and shed Alabama rain.
Taylor grinds it, Taylor coats it
Shanks Concrete Coatings is Taylor and Heather Shanks. Taylor learned the trade directly from Brian Phillips, the installer most of the industry knows as The Epoxy Dude, in southern Indiana · prep technique first, then application, then the details that decide whether a floor is still tight in ten years.
He is on site for the grind, the patch, the broadcast and the topcoat. There is no crew that shows up instead of him, and there is no salesman between you and the person holding the squeegee.

Belinda M.Sixty miles out of Anniston
Calhoun County is home. From there the trailer runs out to the Etowah and St. Clair county lines, down through Talladega, east into Cleburne County and across the Georgia line, and west into the Birmingham suburbs.
Northeast Alabama slabs have their own habits. A lot of the housing stock around Anniston and Jacksonville was poured in the sixties and seventies, which means hard-troweled surfaces that need real grinding rather than a light etch. Out toward Gadsden and Pell City there are more walk-out basements cut into the hillside, and those get moisture-tested before anything goes down. Newer construction in Trussville, Chelsea and Springville is usually a clean, flat pour that coats beautifully as soon as the concrete has finished curing.

Questions we get on the first call
How long before I can park on it?
Foot traffic the next day, vehicles at about five to seven days depending on the system and the weather. Polyaspartic topcoats move faster than epoxy. Taylor will tell you the real window for your floor before he starts, not after.
Will it peel like the kit I bought at the store?
Store kits fail because they are rolled onto sealed, un-ground concrete and there is nothing for them to grab. Every floor here starts with a diamond grinder opening the surface up, cracks and spalls get filled, and the coating goes into a profile it can actually bond to.
Can you coat a basement that gets damp?
Sometimes, and sometimes the honest answer is not yet. Moisture coming up through a slab will push a coating off no matter how good the prep is. Taylor tests for it, and if the slab needs a moisture-mitigating primer first he will say so rather than coat over the problem.
Do you work outside of Anniston?
Yes. The trailer runs about sixty miles in every direction, which covers Gadsden, Talladega, Pell City, Sylacauga, Heflin, the Birmingham suburbs and across the Georgia line to Carrollton and Cedartown.
What does it cost?
It depends on square footage, how much repair the slab needs, and which system you pick, so a number over the phone would be a guess. Taylor looks at the floor first, then gives you a real number in writing.
Residential only, or commercial too?
Both. Garages, basements and patios on the residential side; shops, wash bays, showrooms and warehouse floors on the commercial side. The prep is the same discipline either way.
How do I take care of it once it is down?
Sweep it and mop it with warm water. Skip anything with citrus or ammonia, and put felt pads under anything with a metal foot. If you drop a wrench on it you will mark the topcoat rather than the concrete, which is the point · a topcoat can be refreshed years down the road without redoing the whole system.
How much of my garage do I lose while you work?
All of it, for about three to four days on a typical two-car garage. Grinding is day one, repair and base coat day two, broadcast and scrape day three, topcoat day four. Everything needs to come out before Taylor arrives, including anything mounted low on the walls if you want a coved base.
Tell Taylor about your floor
Square footage, what the space is used for, and what is wrong with the slab now. That is enough to get you a real number.
